Hello,
I've just purchased your plugin "Paid download plugin for Virtuemart" and run into a problem. I have products with variants (child products - IM migrating a VM1.1 shop) and don't seem to be able to apply the custom field for downloads to these products. With simple products everything works o.k. But for the variants the custom field won't save...
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks Petra

Hello, on the custom fields tab an there is an option to inherit the custom fields of the parent product, which you need to uncheck before the custom fields will be saved. Then it should save.

You may find that there is a problem with the download link working though, if so this is a know bug affecting child products which we are working to fix, we should be able to provide an update shortly which fixes this.

Thanks for your reply! That solved my initial problem, but unfortunately introduced another one: now,
the drop down list for selecting the variants is only shown for the parents, but not for the child products...
Do you also have a solution for that?

Thanks Petra

P.S.: The download links on the invoives are o.k. so far. But I'm still on a local server and don't know what it will look like on the live server.

Unfortunately no, this seems to be a limitation of the way Virtuemart handles plugin fields. It does not allow for a product to have multiple plugin fields when it saves the parameters for the fields, which results in the problem you have mentioned. I will check into this, in case there is something further that can be done.

Overall I do find Virtuemart's handling of chlld products to be rather problematic, I don't think that using a plugin system for it really works. We try to avoid using them ourselves for this reason, and just use different products.

You might try to solve this another way, by having a 'back to parent product' link in the child product description.

O.k., I see. I'll probably use some link to the parent product as you suggested. Let me know, if you have any further ideas.

Thanks and best regards

I have looked a bit more at this. The problem is because with the 'overwrite custom fields of parent' option checked then this stops the drop-down list being displayed because it is a field of the parent product. It is a limitation of the way Virtuemart works.

You could possibly try editing the product details template and explicity loading the parent product custom fields and then displaying them. It should work but requires some programming work.

Personally I think a 'back' button would be much simpler to use, eg
<input type="button" value="Back" onclick="window.history.back()">

As far as the download link is concerned, actually there is not a bug with it, it was a mistake in our testing, it should all work fine.

Thanks for your effort and advice! I decided to place a link to the parent product (a back-button won't do in all cases as you can reach the variants from other places too).

Best regards
